Have you ever felt that adrenaline rush when you’re about to do something drastic? Well, for an adrenaline junkie like me, I tend to do something super spontaneous every few weeks. (I would jump of a building one week, and bleach all my hair the other) Last friday, my ‘spontaneity’ hit me. I wanted to change something about myself, and whilst I was on pinterest looking for ideas, I came across a lot of ‘bobs’. I thought: Gee, why not try it out. 5 minutes later, I left the house to enter the nearest salon and told them that I wanted to cut 2 inches of my hair off.
What exactly is a bob?
There are numerous variations to this classic haircut, but personally, a bob is a haircut that falls between the chin and shoulder in length.
How many types of bobs are there?
Numerous! You have the classic bob, asymmetrical bob, long bob, medium bob, layered bob, shag cut bob, curly bob, textured bob, etc.
How do I know what type of bob suits me?
That’s what this article is for! I have written the 4 main factors to think about before getting a bob hairstyle.
Before you do anything, here are a few things to consider if you could pull off a bob haircut.
1. What is your face shape? Anybody can pull off a bob, but the secret lies within what TYPE of bob you should get. If your face is oval, then any type of bob would work for you. However, if your face is round, you’ll want a haircut that wouldn’t put emphasis on the round-ness of your face, but rather something that is the exact opposite: a bob that is 2 inches under your chin – the long bob. If you have a long face, you might want to get a bob with a shag cut that ends between the chin and your shoulders.
2. What is the texture of your hair? I have straight hair, that’s prone to frizz. That means I’ll have to put more effort into styling my hair after a wash, but it’ll require less effort once it is blowdried properly. If you have straight hair, then your bob might look flat. You can ask your hairstylist to cut layers to make it more voluminous. Just ask your hairstylist what they recommend for your hair type, they’ll know what is best for you.
3. Consider your personality. Are you trying to look sophisticated and chic? Try the classic bob or the assymetrical bob. Are you sporty? Then the shag bob is for you!
4. Consider the maintenance. A bob requires a lot of maintenance, imagine what it would look life if your hair started growing in different lengths! However, according to my experience, a long bob is the easiest hairstyle anybody can go for. It’s also a great alternative for those who are lazy. It is long enough to be tied up, and it is chic enough to look fashionable.
As an advocate of ‘going with the flow’. If your heart tells you to do it, DO IT. You shouldn’t worry about what others might think of you. What are you waiting for? Go get a new haircut!
