Held since 1984, the Independent Spirit Awards represent the very best of independent movie-making. They celebrate small-budget, less mainstream films, rather than the same handful of blockbusters that the majority of awards go to. In recent years, the Independent Spirit Awards have become a big event in their own right, and the red carpet attracts many of the same Hollywood stars as other awards shows.
The Independent Spirit Awards are held the night before the Oscars, and this year there was actually a lot of overlap between the nominees. We’ll have to wait until the Oscars take place tomorrow to find out how the winners match up!
In terms of fashion at the awards show, Emma Stone and Jessica Chastain (nominated for her role in A Most Violent Year) both appeared on the red carpet in pretty black lace dresses. Emma went for a slightly more edgy dress, with cut-outs at the waist. Jessica’s dress, on the other hand, was a simple black shift dress with long lace sleeves.
Cate Blanchett and Emmy Rossum, on the other hand, opted for bright spring prints. Cate’s long-sleeved dress featured hearts printed all over it for a fun alternative to more traditional prints. Emmy’s dress had a much more girly floral print, layered over a faint gingham print in a really subtle piece of pattern mixing.
Olivia Munn wore a beautiful coral-toned dress with a heavily beaded bodice and loosely flowing skirt. Aja Naomi King added even more colour to the event in her beautiful vivid yellow dress. The colour was so punchy that it didn’t need any accessorising at all!
Whose style did you like best? And are you excited for the Oscars? Don’t worry, you’ll get to see all the best dresses right here!
